Domestic abuse (or domestic violence) refers to a range of behaviour including emotional, physical, psychological, sexual and financial abuse.

Who Can Be Affected?

Anybody can experience domestic abuse. It can occur regardless of class, age, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality or lifestyle.

  • Everyone has the right to feel safe in their home
  • Everyone has the right to live free from violence, fear, oppression, intimidation and threats
  • Everyone has the right to make their own choices and decisions
  • Everyone has the right to have contact with their friends and family
  • Everyone has the right to be treated with respect
  • The responsibility for domestic abuse always rests with the abuser

What Options Are Available?

If you are experiencing domestic abuse, there are a number of options available to you. You might want to speak to a helpline first to discuss a variety of choices available including legal options, housing options and support options.
